The Quite President Of Bangladesh

Former President Mohammadullah died of cardiac arrest at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases on Friday morning, aged 78. He served as Deputy Speaker and later as Speaker of Parliament. He also served as President of the republic from December 1973 to January 1975.

An unassuming man, former President Mohammadullah was a very capable organizer and consequently it is not surprising that as a political leader-in-exile during the Liberation War this was the sphere where he was active. A good parliamentarian, just as it was integrity that propelled him to the position of Speaker, so it was devotion to his country’s cause, which led him to be its President. Mohammadullah possessed, par excellence, the characteristics deemed most appropriate for the head of state of a parliamentary democracy.

His death has further diminished the ranks of our senior politicians. Like many of the old guard, his grounding began as a lawyer. At a time when confrontational politics seems to be the order of day, the legacy he has left behind is of a tolerant attitude in interaction between the ruling party and the opposition. Sadly, these laudatory political virtues are disappearing day by day.

His character was of the kind, which draws the respect of all. As a scholarly person he followed a moderate line, preferring not to subscribe to any extreme school. Mohammadullah rose gradually to become eventually a political figure of high standing. Throughout his career he steadfastly maintained a low profile and was widely known for his modest and simple manners. We cherish his memory as a rare person who at no time displayed any vanity.

At the time of his death he was leading a retired life. We condole with his family and pray for the eternal salvation of his soul. News From Daily Independent
